My Role
market research / designer
What is Honeycomb.ai?
Honeycomb unites all those with dietary restrictions, and making this cause known to restaurants. Their goal is to make reliable dietary information available to all by filtering menus to show diners the most suitable dishes for their dietary restriction. Honeycomb believes in access to information, social and communal, and community.
Problem
Re-evaluate the user feedback, design audit, and to figure out the user pain points. Then redesign potential new flows and identify design solutions for flaws that the app currently has.
Project Goals
This redesign is aimed to uphold Honeycomb’s value by making the information easier for users to digest.
Questions to answer:
- What are the drop-off points for users and biggest confusion points in the current design post onboarding?
- What are some ways to mitigate these points?
What did the company want me to do?
- simple audit of current app design and make a report of confusion points based on user feedback
- suggest and create UI wireframes and mockups of the screens requiring most clarification
- create mid-fidelity mockups
Research
Before diving into the redesign I looked through the user feedback provided by the company. The summary of these pain points below:
- Users were confused on icon meaning since there was too much inconsistent styles between buttons and icons
- Text was too small making it difficult to read
- Filter feature were not intuitive for users, and they didn't realize map was a feature
- Lack of hierarchy in user interface design which led to the users being unable to successfully navigate the app
Some of questions that arises after reviewing the user feedback with current app were:
- Why is the close out align to the top-left, and the text center aligned?
- Why is there a bright gradient on the Call To Action button, and all buttons throughout?
- Is there enough “breathing room” between items on the screen?
Competitive Research Findings
The next steps led me to conducting a mini competitive research on 4 industry leaders.
I dived into the following 4 apps:
- Doordash
- FindMe GF (Gluten-Free)
- Yelp
- HappyCow
Competitive Research Summary
- Good hierarchy helps users navigate the app successfully.
- Reviews are not the main focus of the page, and this isn't something the app is focused on.
- Separate buttons for separate actions, not all under oner button.
- Call-to-action is visible and easy for users to see.
- Filters have icons/labels that communicate with the users on what it is for.

Constraints
1. Timeline
- timing was the biggest constraint for the project as we were given 40 hours to work on this project
- this resulted in Honeycomb requesting that we redesign only the Restaurant page, Review page, and Pop-up modules instead of our original sketches of other items
- this also resulted in not being able to design all the possible solutions we had originally brainstormed for other user pain points
2. Research
- as designers we would like to have more hands on involvement with the research to better understand the users
